Artist Klara Borbas has followed a challenging, yet memorable journey since moving from her native Hungary to the USA in 1995. She was a potter who had turned to sculpting after more than a decade of producing ceramics in her hometown of Budapest. She was drawn back to clay soon after settling in New York City.
In 2007 she started to work on a very small scale – making ceramic brooches. Transferring the delicate wavy lines from her vases and using under glaze as if it were watercolor, she painted intimate “landscapes” and geometric patterns.
In 2008 she expanded her jewelry line with necklaces, earrings and bracelets. She developed a new style built on contrasts: black and white, hard and soft, shiny and matte. This strong and striking collection brings a fresh outlook to ceramic jewelry. The light weight, hollow pendants carry sculptural qualities based on their classical shapes, carvings and textural richness. Their colors are limited to black and white, giving a dramatic appearance. In some cases the ceramic pieces are completed with silver or brass beads, handmade ebony and palm wood elements. Although the compositions are somewhat minimalist, the unusual pairing of different materials and the soft beauty of the glazed porcelain produces a warm and approachable result.
This jewelry collection represents relaxed elegance, upscale quality and sophisticated taste. Klara is exhibiting her work at the nation’s major juried craft events. Among them are the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show, the American Craft Council/Baltimore Show, the Smithsonian Craft Show and the Buyer’s Market of American Craft.
